Powering up the long-dormant, ancient Athlon server. It only took like 10 minutes. :p http://instagram.com/p...

Aaaand it just shut down by itself. Now I remember why I left it alone for so long. :p

Think it's time to just gut this thing and possibly rebuild from scratch. I don't even know what mobo & proc to use these days though that won't break the bank.

Sounds like the CPU cooler might not be doing its job, may need a good cleaning and reseating with new thermal paste. How old is it and would it be worth it?

If you have Windows installed on that, you can check for sure with Speedfan. Keep it on your screen and watch the readings and see how high they go till right before it shuts down. http://www.almico.com/speedfa...

It's 11 years old. I've long wanted to redo it but the 3 IDE drives I have in there just won't die. Interesting thought about the cooler, may take a look into that. Thanks!

I still have Quantum Fireballs that won't die, in a 17 year old PC that has out lived almost every computer that I have ever owned. There is not much I can do with that machine any more, though. Only really good for testing stuff that needs backwards compatibility with old obsolete crap. That and testing one's patience.

My father had a huge stack of 80G IDE drives that he had no use for any more. He wiped them, popped them into USB enclosures, filled them with jazz music, and gave them as gifts to his jazz loving friends.
