I'm in for a long night, been standing in line since 1pm, got another 12 hours to go.
Just read your other note about the school situation. This is terrible. So sorry you have to go through it. - DeWitt Clinton
Only 6 hours to go, I'm #7 in line so my kindergarten slot is assured. - Ray Cromwell
How are things going, Ray? If only all parents cared as much as you do! - DeWitt Clinton
Just finished, going for a nap. Throughout the night, news trucks came in and filmed and interviewed. It got televised on NBC @ 6am, writeups in SJ Mercury News and elsewhere. The community was awesome, through the night, even neighbors who aren't sending kids to school dropped off snacks, coffee, tea, etc. Many volunteered to stand in line for others to go take a break. Around 5am it finally reached a temperature so low that my clothing couldn't keep me warm anymore so I had to seek shelter in a sleeping bag. This kind of shared hardship is a bonding experience that only made the community stronger. Neighbors who before were just people seen walking dogs from time to time have become friends. Oh, and I picked out all the Googler's in line, the giveaway was NexusOnes. At least 4 Googler's there. - Ray Cromwell
where in bay area is this? and what was the purpose of standing in line? - kartik vaithyanathan
Kartik, it's in Santa Clara near Intel/Sun campus in the Rivermark master planned community. As part of the community, a new K-8 school was built (first in 40 years). Due to demographic factors (mostly high tech/white collar workers), the school's scores have been rapidly rising. The district authorized many new apartment complexes to be built that weren't in the original plans when the school was designed, so now there is overcrowding and population pressure for the school. Therefore, people are lining up to ensure they can go to their local school and not have to bus their kids miles away. - Ray Cromwell
