The liquidity trap, in Keynesian economics, is a situation where monetary policy is unable to stimulate an economy, either through lowering interest rates or increasing the money supply. Liquidity traps typically occur when expectations of adverse events (e.g., deflation, insufficient aggregate demand, or civil or international war) make persons with liquid assets unwilling to invest. In its original conception, a liquidity trap results when demand for money becomes perfectly elastic (i.e. where the demand curve for money is horizontal) so that further injections of money into the economy will not serve to further lower interest rates. Under the narrow version of Keynesian theory in which this arises, it is specified that monetary policy affects the economy only through its effect on interest rates. Thus, if an economy enters a liquidity trap, further increases in the money stock will fail to further lower interest rates and, therefore, fail to stimulate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , http://www.investopedia.com/terms... , - Thomas Page

Here's The Biggest Problem In The American Economy http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-t... Several factors have come together to produce a frustratingly weak economy that has persisted in the U.S. for more than a decade: "Globalization" has opened up a vast pool of billions of workers who work for much less than Americans. This, in turn, has resulted in companies shifting formerly middle-wage-paying jobs overseas. Technology has continued to increase productivity, allowing companies to do more with fewer employees. Average hourly earnings have been flat for ~50 years (after adjusting for inflation), as companies steer their wealth primarily to senior management and owners at the expense of average employees. Tax policies have increasingly favored investors and high wage earners over middle-class and upper-middle-class wage-earners. An obsession with "shareholder value" at the expense of other stakeholders (namely, customers and employees) has led companies to cut employee costs to the bone. , vicious circle http://friendfeed.com/citizen... - Thomas Page

Consider these facts. Over the past five years, Republicans have threatened a filibuster 385 times. That's almost double the rate of the preceding five years. "This level of obstruction is extremely unusual," Norman Ornstein, a scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, told Newsweek. "And the core of the problem is the GOP." The Republican Party has chosen to become the party of no in a political system that can work only if there is some cross-party cooperation. 11 -2 I can't stand this indecision married with a lack of vision http://www.youtube.com/watch... , sort http://www.nytimes.com/2012... , http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012... , 11 -12 http://www.nytimes.com/2012...& , 11 -25 The Senate’s Long Slide to Gridlock http://www.nytimes.com/2012...& , 11 -26 http://www.nytimes.com/interac... - Thomas Page

"No Congress before this one has ever, ever in history been irresponsible enough to threaten default, to threaten an economic shutdown, to suggest America not pay its bills, just to try to blackmail a president into giving them some concessions on issues that had nothing to do with the budget," he said. Mr. Obama has said he won't negotiate over the debt ceiling, leaving it to Congress to ensure that the country is able to pay its bills on time. Mr. Boehner said he rejected that argument. "I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work that way," he said. National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R., Ore.) said the kitchen-sink approach to the debt limit was designed to broaden the GOP message beyond its traditional anti-spending, anti-government focus. "It's not just about cutting spending; it's not just about cutting government," he said. "We have to grow the economy.
