"Christmas cards, shopping lists and what else? The occasions in which we write by hand are fewer and fewer, says Neil Hallows. So is the ancient art form of handwriting dying out? A century from now, our handwriting may only be legible to experts. For some, that is already the case. But writer Kitty Burns Florey says the art of handwriting is declining so fast that ordinary, joined-up script may become as hard to read as a medieval manuscript. "When your great-great-grandchildren find that letter of yours in the attic, they'll have to take it to a specialist, an old guy at the library who would decipher the strange symbols for them," says Ms Florey, author of the newly-published Script and Scribble: The Rise and Fall of Handwriting." - Son of Groucho
What's yours like? Mine is appalling... - Son of Groucho
Every so often I take the time to write notes down at work in cursive, taking care with everything I write but I tend to find that it doesn't take long before the legibility starts going downhill quickly as the speed of note-taking increases. My standard handwriting is probably only readable by me and not all the time even then. - Mark H
Mine's pretty awful but it's always been that way. I'm old enough to have had penmanship classes in grammar school and I never got an "excellent" in it. But I've been reading a lot of historical correspondence from the '20s when people wrote a lot more often and some people had terrible handwriting then, too. I've actually been wishing I had $ to hire an expert to help me read some of the more illegible bits. (Although the epistolary art was much more refined then, I think. Some of the inventive turns of phrase really make me laugh.) - Spidra Webster
My handwriting is so so terrible. It used to be beautiful. I blame 9 years of note taking in university. :( - Jenny H.
Me too! Nine years! I thought my seven years was excessive! - Son of Groucho
I think mine is nice. I make sure I write by hand everyday. My kids do have trouble reading it at times. I'm trying to teach them cursive, but it's daunting. - Anika
