The monitors I have at work now are too wide. I'm not watching videos, I'm using programs. They aren't tall enough, though. If I'm looking at the middle of the screen, the controls on the side of the screen aren't visible. When I read a pdf file, I have to make the page not fill the screen for optimum reading. I've never used big LCD monitors
until this month, and I'm not entirely pleased with them. I'm used to my 17 inch CRT, though I think a 19 inch would be better. A square monitor would be nice. We have so many choices of stuff, but no square monitors. Why is that? - Sue - Friendfeed is best
I'm think a real wide monitor turned to portrait mode might be too tall. What I'd like a big big monitor for, if the room and spacing would work out, would be to be able to use the computer without my reading glasses. That would be so nice. - Sue - Friendfeed is best
It seems to me that if they can make metamaterials that make objects seem invisible, maybe they'll figure out how to make a surface that looks bigger and farther away than it really is. - Sue - Friendfeed is best
Also equilateral triangle monitors would be nice, so you can make big monitor domes. - Sue - Friendfeed is best
Yea, I'm not a big fan of the newer 'wide' monitors either. I have a 24" Dell LCD at home that is 1920 x 1200 which is a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is about right. The newer Dell LCD's are 1920 x 1080 which is a 16:9 aspect ratio which is just too narrow for me. Most new laptops have 1280 x 720 16:9 wide screens which suck also. - Jeff P. Henderson
Hmm -- I love my new 24" LED HD monitor -- it allows 2 open programs, nearly full size, with space around to see the pretty desktop pic. I can move b/w items much faster, and when they finally get Windows 7 installed, bunches of things I do will be made much easier. But then, the programs I use are the standard ones (web browsers, word processors, etc), so use by not compare nicely. One other thing that's helped a lot is "PC" glasses -- I just got a pair and trade out my progressives when I am spending many hours looking at a monitor. They are super anti-glare and that makes a huge difference for me. - Mickey Schafer
The problem I have is that monitor are still measured on the diagonal. 16:10 ratio is taller than 16:9 but 16:9 might sound like a bigger monitor due to measurements. My wife turned a 32" LCD TV into her monitor (16:9). I think she had the right idea. [EDIT: I do like wide monitors for TweetDeck but that's just one application.] - CAJ was here
One of my students did that, too -- I wonder if there is a psych term for monitor envy? - Mickey Schafer
