"I rather disagree. One of the reasons I switched from Windows to Linux was because on Windows I spent more time maintaining my system than using it. On Linux I spend almost no time maintaining it. It just works. > where a reinstall is necessary, linux has no advantage over windows How about not dealing with DRM/licensing issues, for one? > windows maintains the advantage in the majority of all other situations. Debatable." - Tanath

"My shit doesn't break until the hardware does usually. 6-8 mo sounds about typical for most people on Windows too. At that point if you don't know how and aren't willing to learn to deal with it you can do what you'd do on Windows and reinstall. Usually help is available for issues regardless of OS." - Tanath

"Depending on what you want to do you can get by without ever using a terminal. It's just easier and more efficient to do a lot of things if you know how or are willing to use it. Windows is hardly immune to messing up the OS either. Some distros are more reliable than others." - Tanath

"> There's a direct relationship to be had with my future generations. Unlikely. Some young people alive today have a reasonable chance. I'm saying if you care for your kid and your kid has a chance, then perhaps that's sufficient reason to care. Really though it sounds to me like you're trying to get me to argue why you shouldn't be selfish/self-centered." - Tanath

"People care for their children. Some devote their lives to them. People also care for other people, some of whom have children. If you care for someone you should care at least somewhat about what matters to them too. "I basically agree, but I figure /r/tech is a slightly more savvy audience. If you didn't/don't take my advice seriously then my advice is not for you. If you do then maybe you'll consider it when you may not have. I think many could benefit from sacrificing a few games, or sacrificing early play of them, in favour of Linux. "That's basically a myth. It's about as easy as Windows. Easier for some things. If you're already used to Windows it seems more difficult because it's different from what you're used to. Worth it to learn though. Also gaming on Linux has significantly improved in recent years. Some games actually run better on Linux than Windows. Anyway, point was you don't have this problem with Linux." - Tanath

Tanath on Google's co-founders are about to sell $4.4 billion worth of shares - http://www.reddit.com/r...
"I was expecting people to quibble more over some having so much money they could never spend it all, which I think is silly. One might make the argument that giving one's children or descendants too much money has drawbacks and doesn't teach the value of money, etc., but if you do assume absurd amounts of money one could provide for descendants and still have plenty left over for putting it to good use outside of that. The implication of my comment was that you could put it to good use in your lifetime, not after you're gone, though I suppose leaving it to the right people could be a good use that might count." - Tanath

"When it comes to things that can't easily be proven impossible with logic it comes down to evidence, and burden of proof is on the one making the claim. There's no need to claim those things impossible. > Besides that (and corrupted is a pretty strong word, language and meanings change over time, it isn't corruption it's merely different) Fair enough, I consider it corruption because it subverts the meaning and usefulness of the terms. > you can't prove a negative. You most certainly can. Do what I said in the original comment and look it up. Every proof entails proof of a negative in fact. > No experiment (even the ridiculous example I used) could prove that a GMO carrot proved no (additional) danger to every human compared to a regular carrot. Doesn't have to. First of all, that's not a reasonable definition of "safe". Even if you consider that some unknown could come along and render the GMO carrot unsafe, could one not blame the new unknown rather than the carrot? It takes..." - Tanath
