This particular picture from an exhibition in St. Andrews Square shows individual lenses of the fruitfly's compound eye with tiny bristles placed between them. What is the biological function of these bristles? The information given was rather vague: either for protection and self-cleaning or to provide a 'sense' of the speed of flight. - Jan Wessnitzer
