Re: Digital Systems of Control - The Gong Show - http://thegongshow.tumblr.com/post...
""ownership" is probably one of these things that are being the most redefined by software. Of course, this applies to music (or any other digital media) very well, and to the consumer's short term advantage, but it also applies to the very functionality of devices we buy (and own): they can becomes unusable, or at least limited only by software rules. I believe this is part of the "big transition" from a world organized around space to a world organized around time: ownership is very much a "space" consequence... not so much compatible with time, which is both finite and in a single dimension. In time, you can *experience*, not own things. It's now much easier to experience music, than to own it (the whole point of owning it is actually going away!). It's similar with the devices you're mentioning: they will eventually be free (itunes is already!) to let you pay for experiences (like listening to a song, watching an episode... etc)." - Julien
Re: Failure is the tuition you pay for success - http://www.nickgrossman.is/2015...
"I used to think the same, but then I started questioning the very definition of success and failure. They can only be assessed when looking at initial objectives. Generally, whatever I do in life, the most important thing for me is learning. So, when something is a financial "failure" (or at least did not make me a billionaire!), it can still be an incredibly valuable experience and success because I learnt so much. Also, wining any kind of lottery is not a success for me, because, obviously there isn't much to learnt there... etc." - Julien

Re: Superfeedr : How to implement PubSubHubbub - http://blog.superfeedr.com/howto-p...
"You are right, we focuses on 0.3 here. The main reason is that this is still the most widely used implementation. AFAIK the Wordpress hub and a few other smaller ones don't support 0.4 yet! Now, I'll make sure we post an update for 0.4 very soon!" - Julien
Re: Where protocols come from - https://www.usv.com/topic...
"I'm not sure where protocols are, but I want to say that they're not APIs. An API is a "one way" in a sense that it's unilateral: en entity guides ways to interact with it. A protocol, I would assume is more "multilateral": it may be defined by one entity but can apply to very different entities. For example, when HTTP was written by TBL, it was not JUST to interact with *his* server, but to get data from *any* server. That said, it does not mean that APIs can eventually become protocol. For example, IIRC, that *almost* happend with Twitter API when Wordpress implemented it in a way that you could post content to a WP site using the same client used for Twitter." - Julien

Re: With Decentralization, Where is the Money? - https://www.usv.com/post...
"Hum... It's not harder to monetize. It's harder for a single player to skim most of the revenues/profits. Decentralized environments usually hold more value than centralized ones, but it's distributed among (a lot more) players." - Julien

Re: From space, to time: http | Union Square Ventures - https://www.usv.com/post...
"I wouldn't say that they're are no philosophical discussions. They're just much more atomic and "threads" that one has to follow to apprehend. Basically, with the "real-time" wave of social apps we'e gone as close as possible to "present" and we need to back away to see longer terms patterns and discussions." - Julien

Re: From space, to time: http | Union Square Ventures - https://www.usv.com/post...
"I gave the talk 3 times at 3 conferences: BlendWebMix (Lyon, in French), CodeBits (Portugal, but in English), and Lille (France, in English!). The post is also a *shorter* version as there are many more aspects on the technical/background site (there will be a follow up on my blog sometime). I like the idea that landgrab was part of the web's early days and that indeed, we're now fighting for time: I'll add that to the list of my items. The one thing I'm trying to see is that I'm trying to wonder what that means for businesses on the web. Of course, the most obvious consequence is that *assets* which are "space" are loosing some of their "importance" vs. cashflows (which are time). This is clearly illustrated by the fact that it's cheaper than ever to start a business and get it to some kind of profitability. But I also thinks this apply to things like licenses (space as they're often priced by seat/installs) vs. Saas (priced by usage)..." - Julien

"David, I'm sorry for the delay (for some reason, I never got a notification after your comment :). You can run multiple client.subscribe of course. However, to avoid rate limits, I would avoid sending more than 5 concurrently. Generally, these calls are supposed to be very fast, so even queuing them should do the trick. When it comes to notifications, the notification object itself includes the feed object with its url :)" - Julien

Re: Secrets: Do We Really Need Them? - http://continuations.com/post...
"Secrecy removes biases. As @kidmercury says, it's pretty clear with voting. But generally, look at Facebook like's. Since they're so public, it's now pretty clear that they say more about the person liking (and its relationship with the poster) than about the content itself. So we have conflicting signals here. A like incompases 2 things : - the fact that the content is interesting to me - the fact that I want to be known that I liked a post. It's not always easy to asses the proprotion of these 2 signals. Secrecy is a way to remove the 2nd one. It's also one of the rationales behind 'anonymous resumes' or 'blind tests' in the food industry." - Julien

Re: If RSS is dead, why are podcasts so popular? - https://www.usv.com/post...
"It does make a lot of sense indeed and the place of RSS *is* behind the scene. I heard that Facebook may be working on RSS-related product and I'm surprised Twitter still isn't doing anything on this front. More than social tools, I believe Facebook and Twitter are "consuming" platforms: they want their "timelines" to be your homepage. Implementing RSS (the right way!) would of course enable that." - Julien
