"General Motors Corp. directors once drew criticism for accepting the losses that sent the automaker into bankruptcy. The revamped General Motors Co. board charts a more activist course."

"English libel law is the opposite of America’s in many ways. In the United States, the plaintiff, or accuser, must prove that the statement in question was false; public officials must also prove that it was made maliciously, with “reckless disregard” for the truth. In England (Scotland has its own system), the burden of proof rests on the defendant, whose statements are presumed false and who has to establish that they are true."

"It's an odd formulation in some ways as "the right" is not really a single entity. But in so far as it means the dominant mode of discourse among the institutions and blogs and magazines and newspapers and journals that support the GOP, Charles Johnson is absolutely right in my view to get off that wagon for the reasons has has stated. Read his testament. It is full of emotion, but also of honesty."

Arianna Huffington: Journalism 2009: Desperate Metaphors, Desperate Revenue Models, And The Desperate Need For Better Journalism - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna...
"I was asked to give a speech this morning at a journalism conference in Washington, DC sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission. The topic, as it so often seems to be these days, is what can be done to save journalism? Since Rupert Murdoch was scheduled to address the conference a little before me, I thought this would be a good time to take a look at Murdoch's increasingly bellicose war against new media sites that aggregate the news, the increasingly desperate revenue models being discussed for online news, and what, in fact, needs to be done to ensure that journalism will not only survive, but thrive."

"When Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of the Acumen Fund, was in her early twenties, she turned down a promotion on Wall Street and went to the Cote d’Ivoire to open a new branch of the African Development Bank focused on microfinance for women. But the West African women she was supposed to work with shunned her. They talked about her derisively in her presence, letting her know exactly what they thought of an untested, unmarried, American woman with poor French skills being sent to lead them. They intimidated her, locked her out of the office, and (Novogratz suspects) actually gave her food poisoning to scare her away. It worked."

"We recently purchased a building in Queens, and while clearing out the basement we discovered a two lane manual bowling alley in very good condition. We did some research and this basement was most probably a club during the Prohibition era."

"All leaders have a brand. Whether that term is used or not, leaders have an identifiable persona that is a reflection of what they do and how others perceive them. I call this the leadership brand."

"McDonald's is going green — swapping its traditional red backdrop for a deep hunter green — to promote a more eco-friendly image in Europe."
- Frankie Warren
That's part of the problem with the whole sustainability push right now. Some companies are reluctant to point out the great work they're doing because they fear highlighting some of their deficiencies. At Pepperdine, where I am a business student, they teach honesty over perfection. Time will tell if this is the approach McDonald's will take.

"Zynga Inc., maker of the “Mafia Wars” and “FarmVille” games played on Facebook, may be valued at $1 billion based on the sale price of a smaller rival."
- Frankie Warren
This valuation seems way out of line... First, Facebook itself isn't valued at that much more. Second, I don't think the valuation can just scale the way the article describes. Third, these online games suffer from massive amounts of churning in which all their revenue goes into advertising to get more users. Finally, some of their practices are dubious at best: "Some of those offers on Zynga games have turned out to be misleading. An example is when a player is offered to receive more game currency in exchange for filling out an IQ quiz. A user will enter a mobile number to receive the survey’s results and unwittingly sign up for a subscription that will be added to their monthly bill."

"While on her book tour in Noblesville, IN, Sarah Palin encountered a lady who bears a shocking resemblance to her. Not only do their faces match, their clothing styles and their glasses, but apparently they're both big fans of BumpIts. Maybe they can go rogue together?"

That would trip me out... But I'm sure you see it all when you're on a book tour.
