"While Yahoo! Inc and Microsoft Corp lag far behind Google in overall search share, their combined search penetration of 73 percent is not far behind Google, at 84 percent...Yet Google searchers conduct an average of 54.5 searches a month -- about double the number of searches that Yahoo! and Microsoft users conduct combined." Interesting way of looking at search market share data. The reason Google has such a high market share is primarily not b/c more people use Google but b/c users that use Google do more searches on Google relative to users of other search engines.

A concept of a phone app that does augmented reality and face recognition. Seems far out but I bet we'll see this pretty soon... - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
=o That is freakin' amazing! I want my house to have dreams. And my car. Or just a wall in my room. First application though should be cubicals, going to work would be awesome.

"Available to download from the Android Market, CoPilot Live features enhanced GPS navigation guidance, voice-guided turn instructions, safety camera alert, 3D mapping, and more."

$35 to buy from the android store, which seems pricey to me but is actually pretty reasonable given the price of most gps devices, and there is no subscription fee which is nice. One cool thing is that it downloads all the data for your region when you buy the app so it works offline. Downside is that this would be ~2GB for all the US, and unfortunately I only have a 1GB micro sd card in mine.

"Is Google evil? It doesn't matter. They've reached the point of corporate ambition and changing corporate culture that means they're going to be perceived as if they are. Whether they're able to truly internalize that lesson, accept it, and act accordingly will determine if they're able to extend their dominance in the years to come." Via http://ff.im/596K0. Lot's of good points in this article, we should heed them.

"More images of Sony Ericsson's upcoming Android Rachael smartphone have leaked and confirm it's a real looker, right up with the iPhone's minimalistic beauty. Nokia, with its clunky retro-boring N97 should watch out. The Racheal's funky 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8 megapixel autofocus camera and 3D graphics acceleration should even give the new iPhone 3G S a real run for its money."

"Sometimes you want to see the results for multiple searches in Google Maps or you want to quickly switch to a recent query. Now it's possible: Google Maps displays at the bottom of the page a list of recent searches and each layer of search results can be enabled independently. Google Maps uses different colors for the markers so you can differentiate the results."

Congrats to Neal and team for this launch! They've been working on it a while, it took a lot of refactoring of various pieces of client code that display results on the map to make them all conform to the same interface that allows them to be displayed on the map at once.

"In a post-hoc analysis of the side effect questions of their original three-year RCT, they discovered 104 post-menopausal African American women given vitamin D were three times less likely to report cold and flu symptoms than 104 placebo controls. A low dose (800 IU/day) not only reduced reported incidence, it abolished the seasonality of reported colds and flu. A higher dose (2000 IU/day), given during the last year of their trial, virtually eradicated all reports of colds or flu."
- Evan Parker
Evidence that vitamin D helps prevent the flu has been building for a while, but this paper is the first I've seen to show clear evidence of it in a controlled study and explain the mechanism behind it. The paper also goes into how flu is transmitted, suggesting that sick-to-well transmission is likely not the main way in which it is transmitted (I haven't read far enough yet to see if they suggest an alternative).
- Evan Parker
Ah, towards the end it talks about "good transmitters" that are possibly asymptomatic being the primary method of transmission.

"Ars reviews the Palm Pre, part 2: the webOS experience In this second installment of our Palm Pre review, we go in-depth on the software side of the device. Does Palm's webOS really live up to its promise as a "cloud" messaging mobile? More on this topic, as well as the calendar, browser, contacts, alerts, dialer, and other features, inside."

Just pre-ordered this, looks like it should be out in the next month. I can't wait to play it - I love the original and the first expansion - and this expansion looks like it adds a bunch of new depth to the game.

Blue produce / consume 2x. I had 6 blue production worlds, free trade association, expanding colony, alien toy shop, galactic renaissance, replicant robots, export duties, 35 points from consuming, the 4 production world goal, the 3 brown/blue goal, and the first to discard a card goal. I got 30 points on the last turn: 16 from consume 2x, 3 from expanding colony, and 11 from galactic renaissance. It was glorious :)
- Evan Parker
Nice. The stars aligned. Also the alien toy shop is awesome like that. ;-)
- Mandi
Yes, alien toy shop is awesome. As I was playing I just couldn't believe my luck, as draw after draw I got what seemed like the perfect hand and my opponent (Eric H.) always seemed to play exactly what I needed. He ended up with 37 points.

"What an entertaining and fabulous spring show from Decadance! For over two hours, Deca showcased eighteen exciting choreographies each with its own unique blend of dance fusion — going from squaring dancing to redowa in “Feel Good Inc”, mixing bhangra with schottische in “Maahi Ve”, swing dance in “Paris Waltz”, and dramatic and humorous theatrical plays in “One Step to Save the World”. It was a most entertaining night that ended with one of my favorite Deca choreographies, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, choreographed by David Chen with music by Wham! and photographed here."

Wow! Those are awesome pics. Sorry to miss the show. I think you need longer hair to pull off a headband though. *grins* ;-)
- Mandi
Hehe, yeah I got my hair cut really short a couple weeks ago. Shortest I've ever cut it I think.

"This comparison is based on unlimited data, unlimited voice, and unlimited text messaging. The iPhone comes in as the most costly device at $3800 over two years. The Palm Pre was the cheapest at $2600, with the G1 falling in the middle at $3150."
