Actually, he's the only one lamenting the fall of Smolensk. But I like your version better; it's much more poignant.

Sorry, didn't want to get into detail. After Smolensk a series of historical events led to the division of Poland. Matejko used his own face for the figure of the jester, which for me at least, is trying to send a message. The artist as seer is one of my favorite memes.
