To all the FF Photographers. I'm planning to get a digital SLR camera (tight budget, I'm not a pro) which one should I go for?

Canon Rebel XSi is a great choice as well. Remember, regardless of which entry DSLR you get, you're buying into a system. The body will be worth very little in 5 years, but the lenses you buy will be useful and valuable for many more years. Look more at the system than the entry DSLR.
- Michael
Manuela, how much can you spend? For an entry-level DSLR it's got to be the Nikon D40 or if you can afford it the D40X. But don't forget you'll need a lens. Normally go for the kit lens, e.g. 18-55mm, though check what comes with the D40's.

Rebel XTi: $500-$600 ... XSi $600-$700. I would go with either one of those. I have the XTi and absolutely love it.
- Brandon
Kol, I'm looking for a good entry level DSLR and I believe the Nikon D40 would be the best option for me, price-wise and quality-wise; It also comes with 18-55mm lenses (amazon offer) it's not too bad as I just need something to experiment with.
- Manuela
FYI Manuela: Canon may be releasing a new DSLR (replacing the XSi) on the 25th of March :) It will have 1080p video recording capabilities.
- Michael Forian
Brandon, that's a great camera, expensive though :O
- Manuela
@Michael gosh It will be like an hybrid between a DSLR and a Camcorder...interesting
- Manuela
Yes, it would be :) Here's another camera that Canon implemented 1080p into: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews...

Manuela, yep the D40 is a good starter and so is that lens. If you can get hold of one I'd get a polarising filter. More for protecting your lens than anything.

Nikon D40 with a good range single lens...preferably VR. I'm a HUGE fan of VR. You're definitely looking at $600-700. I don't like the lens it comes with on Amazon, though, which sucks bc you can't buy the body alone easily.

buy a used 20d (or 10d if you need to go cheaper) on eBay with a 50mm f/1.4 lens (or f 1.8 if you need to go even cheaper). play with that a while and see if it's for you before spending more money. If you need more you can always sell the 20D back on eBay and buy something better. A used 20D is a lot better than a new Rebel. You'll want that 50mm f/1.4 with whatever Canon you might upgrade to later.

I would suggest the D40 and add the 50-200 VR lens. That would give you a great starting outfit with lots of flexibility. My wife has this setup and takes great pictures.

Would it be tacky for me to say that I have a D50 w/ 50 mm f1.8 and a D70 w/ the 18-70 kit lens that I'm trying to sell? I don't have the box for the D50, but I have all the necessary accessories plus a spare battery for it for $325 shipped. And I have the box and original accessories for the D70 (it's missing the cover over the USB port on the side, but it doesn't affect operation), selling it for $375 shipped. The D70 was used a lot more than the D50, but both are in excellent condition.
- Cheryl Jones
the D50 is a rock solid camera that I've used for years. You can't go wrong with it.
- Jason Shultz
Yep D50 is good (and my first SLR), though not sold new now I believe. D40 is the replacement.

I would recommend the Canon EOS 400D. Sold in the US as Rebel XTi. They've introduced another model called XSi but there are no real differences. I use that camera myself and it is good for an amateur hobbyist (like me). But frankly, I'd say go with Thomas's advice, He has way more experience in this than scores of me put together. :)

Canon EOS Rebel XSi (or 450D outside of the US). (Highest camera in that class.) It is such an incredible camera and my dad - who's a photographer - was very impressed with its features that came with it. More bang for your buck. An amazing camera that I know I'll be using for quite a while.
