I'd like to know the microanatomy. Are there really now connections on the way? Neurons are ridiculously expensive, so if you can save some, you would. As much I like evidence for 'unintelligent' design, I'd be very skeptical that this particular nerve isn't doing anything along the way. However, this could be easily tested and if there really isn't anything going on, this is a nice case for 'unintelligent design'. - Björn Brembs
