"One of the biggest mysteries of HBO’s new Scientology documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is what happens to be missing from the Alex Gibney-directed piece: the whereabouts of Scientology Leader David Miscavige’s wife, Shelly. Despite Shelly apparently disappearing from the public eye in 2006, Gibney didn’t tackle the subject, instead focusing on prime details to build a foundation of the basics of Scientology as it stands today. “At the end of the day, rather than doing stone skipping and covering as much as possible in a superficial way, we chose to dig in on certain things,” Gibney told Business Insider."

This was the one piece I was wondering about when watching the documentary, since it had been covered with such a splash around the same time that Paul Haggis had circulated his letter leaving the church. The one was there as a prominent piece, while there was no mention of Shelly Miscavige at all (even in the archival footage from years ago.)

On the one hand, law enforcement has (in theory) verified her whereabouts. On the other, given how the church has handled other matters, it is difficult to take anything they say at face value. I'm guessing that it is a big enough story that it would have derailed the overall points they were trying to make in the film.

Yeah, I'd like to hear details about what proof law enforcement got. Because honestly I believe it's likely they just got tired of being harassed by CoS and decided to call it quits.

We watched this tonight. I was wondering how this would affect all the moderate scientologists.

I admit, I haven't met any that I'd consider moderate in the way I would most other religions I've interacted with. The interviewing process that you go through in the early phases seems to weed casual adherents out.
