SteveG for NSA Chief (Axis of Tech)
- clive boulton
Ugh. Just got a giant Lysol ad that interrupted the stream.
- Matt M (inactive)
We are talking about http://techcrunch.com/2011... (Steve's analysis of Muglia's firing).
- Robert Scoble
I think H264 was basically fired for licensing.. exactly what Scoble said
- Matt M (inactive)
So the ads just play over the live content?
- Todd Hoff
Todd, yeah.. I got some live stream for a bit and the thing popped up overtop
- Matt M (inactive)
MPEG-LA is trying to nickle and dime *everyone* in the stack. Browser vendors, content people, etc.
- Matt M (inactive)
Ballmer divide and conquer or Ballmer all in on Cloud?
- clive boulton
this is one of the ways that patents actually hurt rather than help innovation in my opinion
- Xenophrenia
Since the YouTube app on the iPad is native, they could include a non-hardware decoder in that.
- Matt M (inactive)
Wouldn't that be a big battery drain Matt?
- Todd Hoff
It'll be more of a drain than H264, but it's not going to be orders of magnitude off.
- Matt M (inactive)
Perhaps they can make us switch by making something better so we will want to switch? Just a thought.
- Todd Hoff
http://www.youtube.com/html5 says they serve WebM and h264
- Kevin Marks
Supported Browsers
We support browsers that support both the video tag in HTML5 and either the h.264 video codec or the WebM format (with VP8 codec). These include:
Firefox 4 (WebM, Beta available here)
Google Chrome (WebM and h.264)
Opera 10.6+ (WebM, Available here)
Apple Safari (h.264, version 4+)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (h.264, Beta available here)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8 with Google Chrome Frame installed (Get Google Chrome Frame)
- Kevin Marks
It is way better from a licensing perspective though - it's not just the browsers who have to pay in the video stacks: it's the people who generate content and every point in the pipeline.
- Matt M (inactive)
Here's a WebM decoder in Flash (early stage btw): http://www.bluishcoder.co.nz/2011...
- Matt M (inactive)
Chrome includes inbuilt flash on all platforms.
- Matt M (inactive)
This interview with the MPEG LA lawyer guy shows why H.264 is scary from a patent perspective: http://www.betanews.com/article...
- Matt M (inactive)
Google have just put out a blog post on the issue. http://blog.chromium.org/2011...
- Jamie
Some Ballmers bonus withheld http://bit.ly/ballmer...

Blackberry's Playbook?
- Xenophrenia
RIM is dead (ok, maybe dying)
- Matt M (inactive)
Blackberry are pushing the Web for the playbook
- Jamie
Blackberry development is so painful. Painful enough that we scrapped plans to actually ship a BB app. Although I haven't tried their new HTML5 development suite yet
- Matt M (inactive)
Like she doesn't have enough money ;-) ... she's a poor girl trying to make a living
- Xenophrenia
DESQview ftw?
- Matt M (inactive)
DESQview X, to be specific :)
- Rob La Gesse
Corp IT types like less apps...(more control)
- clive boulton
Something flipboard-like in HTML5: http://www.20thingsilearned.com/forewor...
- Matt M (inactive)
Was chatting to the developer of this History of Jazz app lat night: http://itunes.apple.com/us...
- Kevin Marks
HTML5 has a *long* way to go, but it's getting there.
- Matt M (inactive)
it's like those traps you see in old westerns where they'd drive, say a herd of horses, into a box canyon ... where you end up trapped within a device as the only way to access content - at least that what producers would like
- Xenophrenia
Matt: Flipboard like says it all. It isn't exactly like Flipboard.
- Robert Scoble
The Safari and IE ones are DirectShow and QuickTime elements. Not browser plugins
- Matt M (inactive)
The elements would actually enable WebM system-wide, not just in the respective browsers...
- Matt M (inactive)
Someone else can ship a version of mobile Safari with webM support. And, isn't Opera Mobile on iOS?
- coldbrew
Redmond main board is restless (Ballmer is behind and taking action)
- clive boulton
i just cant switch fast enough
- Tina Chase Gillmor
long studio shot 1...2....3
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Next weeks planned launch of "The Daily" pushed (iPad2..?)
- clive boulton
is the plugin that plays WebM ChromeFrame?
- Kevin Marks
Kevin, they are native media elements: http://review.webmproject.org/gitweb... and http://review.webmproject.org/gitweb...
- Matt M (inactive)
building QuickTime and DirectShow components makes sense for WebM. That doesn't help deployment of <video>
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: <video> tag on Safari and IE use those elements. Safari uses QuickTime components on Windows for rendering <video>.
- Matt M (inactive)
Office has its own Chatter. http://www.officelabs.com/officet...
- Jamie
bet Apple don't put the webM components in the codec download program
- Kevin Marks
Flash is horrible. I congratulate Apple for forcing a better standard.
- Karoli
Kevin, hah yeah. Is Vorbis in there?
- Matt M (inactive)
never got Vorbis in there
- Kevin Marks
they didn't put Perian in
- Kevin Marks
God I love Perian. It's probably in a licensing gray area though.
- Matt M (inactive)
http://www.perian.org/ for you all
- Kevin Marks
Kevin's just so on task with the links today...many thanks
- Tina Chase Gillmor
false equivalence arguments. yawn.
- Karoli
shade it ... key phrase there ... ;-)
- Xenophrenia
I love this show :)
- Matt M (inactive)
Dislike Sprint EVO candy
- clive boulton
this sounds like The Ed Show.
- Karoli
The EVO was bad for that. I got the free I/O one. You need to root it to remove all the crap. Apple might not always be able to force carriers to keep crap off phones forever
- Matt M (inactive)
Apple thinks about Apple first. But so does every other company.
- Paul Puri
because they are legally obligated to do what is profitable for the stockholders ... customers are only a means to an end
- Xenophrenia
#plan EVO root canal
- clive boulton
Androids in other countries are much less full of cruft
- Kevin Marks
Companies are companies. They're not family members
- Tina Chase Gillmor
That's what I love about my N1 - no crap on by default. The only 3rd party stuff is Twitter and FB. TBH, I'd be happy if they shipped with even fewer icons to free up memory.
- Matt M (inactive)
cliveboulton: No doubt. I'm not sure why these are barriers for this audience.
- coldbrew
One interesting note from GoogleTV: it doesn't let you uninstall the default apps, but it lets you hide them from the main screen. Is this that preview of future Android builds? Hiding carrier apps from the homescreen.
- Matt M (inactive)
coldbrew: time...
- clive boulton
My Droid had no crapware. I get to muss it up on my own.
- Paul Puri
Netflix is Windows Media for DRM I think... but that might be H264
- Matt M (inactive)
if companies did only what their users want - they'd never get anything done - they have to be able to make a decision - there are always going things that piss off a significant part of their audiences
- Xenophrenia
is it happy hour yet?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I got a bit of crapware on my Droid2 - Blockbuster App??!!?
- Kevin Marks
tina, try the 'Happy Hours' app on Android. it's like foursquare meets groupon for drinkers
- Kevin Marks
there just have to be those who stand outside and see the direction it may go and sound the alarm if things head in a questionable direction
- Xenophrenia
windows mobile. yawn.
- Karoli
The Palm Windows Mobile stuff shipped with Wifi. The PalmOS ones couldn't because the OS was crap.
- Matt M (inactive)
[Netflix] Reed Hastings replaces Ballmer...
- clive boulton
iPhone originally was a browser in your pocket
- Kevin Marks
In other words - no companies look out for the customer ... not really
- Xenophrenia
Kevin: yeah, and one that worked and was nice to use.
- Robert Scoble
Steve - don't show the top of your head like that
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I had an app store and multitasking on my phone in 2004... SideKick ftw
- Kevin Marks
iPhone added folders to revolutionize the smart phone industry.
- Paul Puri
without iPhone, Android would have shipped and disrupted blackberry
- Kevin Marks
I think iPhone forced Android to rethink its approach, but it still would have shipped and would have been a disruptive force. Some of the old Android 0.x videos are hard to watch.
- Matt M (inactive)
If this stuff were for our benefit - oh how awesome the internet would be ... but everyone wants the yacht for the CEO ... so we get what they give us and argue about who is looking out for us ;-)
- Xenophrenia
Kevin, I'm guessing those Androids would've looked more like Blackberry than iphones.
- Karoli
exactly
- Xenophrenia
@Kevin: without iPhone's success, would Google have prioritized Android as they did?
- Jerome Hughes
it's all about the money - not about what's best for anyone ... ;-)
- Xenophrenia
yes, they would have (or like sidekicks, like G1 did) http://flic.kr/p/76z4BF
- Kevin Marks
Here's an old screenshot of Android from 2007: http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c...
- Matt M (inactive)
still think Ballmer buys RIM (moves the needle and prolongs exchange)
- clive boulton
Who knows, but google was investing heavily in android well before iPhone shipped
- Kevin Marks
gPhone video too: http://www.youtube.com/watch... Definitely touch-enabled, but it was focused heavily on key navigation too
- Matt M (inactive)
Kevin: and Apple did four iPhone prototypes before the first one shipped (they were working on it for years). The story behind the development of the iPhone is actually pretty interesting.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert have heard it said that those first prototypes were not so small, more like an iPad, so the iPhone was actually an iPad nano... is this the case?
- Jerome Hughes
WiFi beats the carriers for me (saving a fortune w/o data plan) using pay as you go voice.
- clive boulton
Wifi voice calling is cool.
- Kevin Marks
and sometimes you need to temporarily piss of users to implement something that is to their benefit
- Xenophrenia
Oh man, just noticed that the EVO shipped with a Blockbuster app too.
- Matt M (inactive)
also GSM works worldwide, not just in the US like CDMA
- Kevin Marks
Wifi voice calling is cool (but receiving wvc is not easy)
- clive boulton
true; you need a SIP bridge
- Kevin Marks
looking up SIP bridge =)
- clive boulton
I'd love it if Google could force handsets to move to data-only.
- Matt M (inactive)
WebOS has a native library too - based on SDL
- Matt M (inactive)
WebOS is Linux, but the layers about are closed
- Matt M (inactive)
matt, same is true of Android, though mor of android is open
- Kevin Marks
Robert, I think you mean Pixi
- Matt M (inactive)
data-only - Jobs did iPod Touch?
- clive boulton
Kevin.. true, but you can run an Android using nothing but open source. WebOS wouldn't give you anything but a raw framebuffer AFAIK
- Matt M (inactive)
I have a Pre2 in front of me here.. kind of nice to get root without hacking tho
- Matt M (inactive)
cliveboulton: If you run DD-WRT on your router, it has a version with a SIP agent.
- coldbrew
DD-WRT cheers!
- clive boulton
;-)
- Xenophrenia
learned a lot - thx all
- clive boulton
Yeah, good show. Well made arguments.
- coldbrew
these are always fun.. especially in the live comment section :)
- Matt M (inactive)
GG after party (juicy bits now)
- clive boulton
who can read lips
- clive boulton
