Now here's a picture you don't expect to see in Hawaii! Took it at Koko Crater w/ my CrackBerry.
What are those thingys? - Jim Turner
Way out kind of looks like the cactus was placed on purpose - JuneM
Very cool pic! - Tracey Smith
which island was this ? - Dana Duvauchelle
This picture was taken at Kokohead Crater Botanical Gardens about a 5 minutes walk from the Plummeria grove! Inside the crater it's a desert. The other vegetation is watered... like the hibiscus and the plummeria. - Arleen Boyd
Isn't a lot of Hawaii originally desert (certainly the volcano peaks above the tree line are mountain deserts) a lot of the west coasts were deserts until some 19th century/early 20th century irrigation projects. - Brian Sullivan
Jim, those are barrel cactus and what looks like a yucca. Hawaii isn't completely tropical so it's not that unexpected. - Anika
Koko crater is on Oahu, out on the east side of the island, near Hawaii Kai (neighborhood), on the way to Sandy Beach, Makapuu Beach, etc. There are horse stables there and hiking. It's pretty nice. - Morgan
Yes Morgan! It is amazingly beautiful. Brian - The state of Hawaii has 11 of the 13 micro-climates in the world. I believe we have 9 of them here on the island of Oahu. The Big Island has a few more micro-climates with the height of their mountains. - Arleen Boyd
very cool and yes, that is NOT what I'd expect in Hawaii...thanks for sharing. - Tracey Smith
