"A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled. Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing sight to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor or a shock wave - although no one appears to have mentioned UFOs yet. The phenomenon began when what appeared to be a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain. It stopped mid-air, then began to circulate."

This is really a remarkable set of photos and videos. What surprises me most, given the plausible rocket explanation, is that the circle is so symmetrical. If it's actually a cone only a few spots would have this angle on it. Others would have the axis 'squished' closer to one side of the circle.

I thought lasers and ice crystals. What makes you think rockets?

Perhaps it's a tractor beam from the Death Star.

The photos are obviously slow shutter release so it wouldn't have looked like those photos - the motion is what caused those photos. It looks like a strobe shining into the sky in a circular pattern, then some other light causing the blue pattern. Beautiful - I bet Disney could produce such an effect.

Although the video looks more like a spinning rocket of some sort. Very cool.
