Build 2011: First Glimpse of the Windows 8 App Store - http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud...
"There will be an apps store platform built into Windows 8, and there will be a self-service mechanism for developers to publish their wares and make money from them" - LANjackal
Question: Why is there an appstore for a PC OPERATING SYSTEM ? When we wanted to install a new application, we used to put in a CD or go to its website and downloaded the executable. Apple launched an app store for the iPhone because phones could not do that yet, at the time. It should be completely unnecessary for PCs. Why is Microsoft going BACKWARDS to Apple's way? It blows my mind... - Aykın Çakaloz
If you read around, you'll that MS is supporting both the traditional PC method of downloading and installing apps from your own sources and the store. As a matter of fact, the store is geared mostly toward Metro apps. Conventional Windows applications will still be downloaded and installed as they are today - LANjackal
(one os to rule them all) - chaz2b
Yes I know that, but my argument still stands on "its unnecessary". It is basically like a GFWL gimmick. It will have absolutely no benefit to the customer OR the developer. Why would any developer choose NOT TO host, publish and update their software themselves but try to comply with Microsoft's overly rigid, restrictive, time consuming approval process instead? - Aykın Çakaloz
They don't have to. But they can if they want to. And I'm not sure what you mean by "overly restrictive," given that both Apple and Google also have app stores with approval and removal policies - LANjackal
"Restrictive" as opposed to not even using the app store for publishing - Aykın Çakaloz
What part of "optional" and "the developer does NOT have to use the app store" don't you understand? - LANjackal
