Am planning to buy a GPS unit for my son. Wavering between Garmin and Tom Tom. Deciding factor might be the quality of maps in Whitehorse and Yukon generally. Does it matter --are maps all from the same source anyway?

Not sure about source maps...but everyone I talk to says Garmin is the best. Lifetime map updates for $80.

I would marry my garmin if I could, and just got the lifetimes updates.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 265w and like it so in the end Garmin might be best but others I know have Tom Tom and swear by it.

So the maps are from different sources so I am back to trying to decide about quality of maps in the Whitehorse and the Yukon.

He is a planning on driving and at least spending the summer there (and perhaps a whole year if he can find a teaching job). But I am guessing that hiking/canoeing are on the agenda as well -- both he and his girlfriend spent years as camp/tripping staff.

Yeah -- from what I can tell that is true -- my Garmin has a walking and biking mode so it can be used in urban walking and biking situations but is mainly a car GPS. I was thinking a car GPS would be my contribution. I wouldn't presume to get a canoeing/hiking device for him -- he probably knows more about it than I.

As someone pointed out earlier Garmin updates are now available at 60-90 lifetime. I have never updated my Garmin and for my purposes anyway it hasn't been an issue.

I agree things change - and occasionally I find myself out in the weeds when on streets not on my older maps but like I said it hasn't been a real issue up 'til now. I might consider an update next year some time.

Well the service is an issue (and Google maps may be updated to your device on the fly but is still often way out of date) -- besides the cost of the device, the service. I suspect if you do a cost analysis it is way cheaper to use a single purpose GPS device.

Well Google maps occasionally being sadly out of date is a fact (Bing in many cases is better). The cost analysis I guess is arguable.
