"Head south of the border for the Geo Quiz – that’s south of the Texas – Mexico border. The Mexican state we’d like you to name looks out on the Gulf of Mexico. The state’s northern boundary follows the path of the Río Bravo, though in the US the river goes by the name the Rio Grande. This state is caught up in Mexico’s drug war. In fact, during a raid a few days ago, police there seized two homemade tanks. These armored tanks are used by drug cartels to protect their trafficking routes to the US. The answer is the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas. As the BBC’s Julian Miglierini tells anchor Marco Werman, it’s where Mexican police have seized a number of homemade tanks being used by drug cartels to protect trafficking routes into the US."

Heard this story this afternoon and was all O.O

I read about this last week. It's scary how well armed the drug cartels are.

Mexico is pretty bad in some states. :'(

Truly. I was never afraid to travel in Mexico before, but I am starting to think twice about it now. So much violence and unrest happening in the country right now. Not just on the border and Chiapas anymore.

The touristy places are ok. Juarez is murder central. Kidnappings left and right.

k, this was in Taumilipas- not nearly as violent as Juarez. I wouldn't step foot in Juarez if you paid me. Between 10-12 murders there a day.

Zulema, where I did my graduate research in Hidalgo, the streets were patrolled by the federales to prevent citizens from uprising. I've seen quite a bit of Mexico, but nothing I would call a touristy place.

JA, yes, I did some birding there when I was in south Texas for a field trip. It's unfortunate that the drug cartels and the violence that follows is radiating so quickly.

Jenny the touristy places are lovely! I've been to Pto Vallarta at least 3 times. Hope to visit Cancún and other beach spots.
