That doesn't make sense. You can file state taxes for free by going to the Franchise Tax Board's website. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter whether you're a Californian or not, the e-file option is still free to do. - Spidra Webster

Would mean making two filings, for federal and resident state, and a separate non-resident state filing. It's probably cheaper, as far as worry, time, and effort to do them together and pay the fee. - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
