Alfred Bester, Tiger Tiger aka The Stars My Destination: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://www.youtube.com/watch...
"The Stars My Destination had its origins in a newspaper clipping that Bester found about Poon Lim, a shipwrecked World War II sailor on a raft, who had drifted unrescued in the Pacific for a world record 133 days because passing ships thought he was a lure to bring them within torpedo range of a hidden submarine. From that germ grew the story of Gully Foyle, seeking revenge for his abandonment and causing havoc all about him: a science fiction re-telling of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo with teleportation added to the mix. It has been described as an ancestor of cyberpunk." - Graham Sergeant

Currently reading it! - Graham Sergeant
Read it just a couple of years ago as part of a Sci-Fi Masterworks series. I'm often disappointed by books more but so far every single one I've read in this series has really lived up to expectations : http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/masterw... http://www.amazon.co.uk/s... or http://www.waterstones.com/waterst... - James Tindall
I've read about a quarter of this series. Tbh I think I prefer the original covers to a lot of these books... publishers seemed to be more experimental in the 50s, 60s and 70s. - Graham Sergeant
yeah the poorly designed new covers really bother me too. - James Tindall
