Colin Jensen Because every language she came to us from has gender.  More specifically, "navis" in Latin is feminine (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki...), and French / Spanish / Italian / Portuguese / English (all the "great historical shipbuilding cultures") get their word and usage from "Navis."
