Slack, the Office Messaging App That May Finally Sink Email - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2015...
I don't see an equivalent here for the FF bookmarklet for sharing webpages. - Sean McBride
A possible substitute for Friendfeed? -- so far, I am thinking not. - Sean McBride
Requires a single domain name for the Slack account. Such as a companies email domain address and then employees with corporate email address can sign up. It sends a validation email as well to that email address. So to do this someone would need to host an email server with a domain that alias accounts can be setup that forwards to a separate real email address that they can recieve the validation email from. - CW
It has some very cool features for sharing and discussing information, but the environment is closed not open -- and the interface overall doesn't feel as intuitive and simple as FF. - Sean McBride
Apple Admits Siri Voice Data is Being Sent to Third Parties - Infowars http://nzzl.me/1BxYqYG via @nuzzel thanks @PrisonPlanet
I don't think Apple has ever tried to hide this? - Stephan Planken
"“The iOS terms clearly state that Apple will record what you say and may send it to subsidiaries and their agents. It goes on to add that they will record the names of your contacts, your relationships with them, in-home devices, and sometimes your location,” writes Tim Pool. Where is the data collected by Siri being sent to? Last month, a Reddit user called called FallenMyst claimed that he had started work for a company called Walk N’ Talk Technologies and that his job was to check for incorrect translations made by Siri. Audio heard by the individual included “sexting via voice and people giving the usual banal and weird commands to their phones,” reported Forbes. As Pool points out, the vast majority of people don’t read terms of service agreements and so are completely clueless to the fact that Apple is recording their voice data and sending it to third parties, as well as keeping detailed records of their every location." - Sean McBride
My guess is that most users of Apple products haven't fully grasped the implications of this policy. - Sean McBride
Global warming could hit rates unseen in 1,000 years - Quartz - http://qz.com/359620...
"We are standing on the edge of a new world where warming is poised to accelerate at rates unseen for at least 1,000 years. That’s the main finding of a paper published March 9 in Nature Climate Change, which looked at the rate of temperature change over 40-year periods. The new research also shows that the Arctic, North America, and Europe will be the first regions to transition to a new climate, underscoring the urgent need for adaptation planning." - Sean McBride

Facebook Officially Shuts the Door on FriendFeed http://recode.net/2015...

I've got Facebook and Google+ accounts but have always found their interfaces to be unappealing. I may tweet now and then -- https://twitter.com/seanmcb... -- or go silent until I see a new social media platform that turns me on. What I have always liked about FF is that it is clean, lightweight, nimble and powerful compared to the competition. Most other people apparently don't share my aesthetic tastes regarding social media software -- they flocked to Facebook. - Sean McBride

The term “climate change” is reportedly banned in Florida - Salon.com - http://www.salon.com/2015...
"As rising seas lap at its shore, Florida’s come up with a fool-proof plan for dealing with climate change: an official policy of ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away. For officials at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the agency ostensibly in charge in studying and preparing for the impacts of climate change, the term “climate change” itself, along with its counterpart ”global warming,” is reportedly verboten. That’s according to a damning new report from the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting, published this weekend in the Miami Herald." - Sean McBride

"They are reaching out to people like Mr. Hammerbacher, whose career arc traces the evolution of data science as it has spread across the economy. After a job designing trading models at Bear Stearns, he worked for a few important years at Facebook, where he started the social network’s data team and made his reputation and a tidy sum. Next, he was one of four founders of Cloudera, a fast-growing company that makes software tools for data science. And now he is immersed in medicine." - Sean McBride

LexisNexis TotalPatent Launches Improved Version of Semantic Search - http://www.ipwatchdog.com/2015...
"TotalPatent, a web-based patent research, retrieval and analysis service powered by the world’s largest collection of searchable full-text and bibliographic patent authorities, allows researchers to enter up to 32,000 characters (equivalent to more than 10 pages of text)—much more than the length of an entire patent abstract—into its search field. The newly upgraded semantic brains, pioneered by LexisNexis in 2009 and continuously improved upon using contextual information provided by the wealth of patent data available to the system, present results in the form of a user-adjustable word cloud, in which the weighting and positioning of terms can be controlled for more precise results. In addition to millions of full-text patent records, TotalPatent also utilizes scientific, technical and other non-patent literature to return the deepest, most thorough search results." - Sean McBride
