Turns out I was being a bit mean about REE and the real reason for my datetime woes was one machine is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit. #fail
Great. To solve my problem, use DateTime. But BSON in Ruby (for MongoDB) doesn't support DateTime! ARGH!
Actually that's not right. It'll parse something from 19xx OK, but not 18xx?
